Transforming an innovative stage show into a one-of-a-kind online experience

The Boy in the Book was a live stage show documenting the real-life story of Nathan, in his search for the boy who had owned a full collection of Choose Your Own Adventure books, which Nathan bought on eBay. The boy, named Terence, had written in the books poignant, heartbreaking, angst-ridden scribblings about his own life. He had even overwritten some of the words of the stories to reflect his feelings and in one of the books, some pages of a forgotten diary fell out.

Reading through this boy’s thoughts and stories, Nathan saw parallels with his own life. This spurred him to go on a quest to find Terence, which developed into a story with twists and turns, emotional highs and lows and, for Nathan, a journey of self-discovery as the search for the boy unfolded…

This journey of self discovery has been brought into people’s hands as a digital experience, played from your phone or computer.

This is not simply a case of recording the show and playing it back as a video. Our experience goes a step further, completely re-framing the setup for digital by bringing the audience in to be a crucial member of Nathan’s team on his quest.

“An immersive, fascinating experience which leads to a real emotional investment in what’s taking place”

To achieve this we created a chat-room, Messenger-style system, enhanced by beautiful illustrations and supported by a powerful script editing tool. This has defined a new method of interactive documentary story-telling, which has been critically acclaimed.
