A creative touring installation focussing on the unheard stories of wartime

The Imperial War Museum’s Second World War and Holocaust Partnership  programme supported 8 cultural heritage partners to engage with new audiences and share hidden or lesser-known, local stories of displacement during the second World War. These specifically targeted diverse and minority communities.

Through a collaboration with Storyfutures Academy these stories were dramatised into 8 short-form audio pieces. Four entered this partnership to give a physical and digital presence to the sonic experiences. We created a travelling exhibition, rich in imagery, with a digital browsing and selection system to allow the public to immerse themselves in the stories.

Given the sensitive subject matter of the sometimes funny, sometimes harrowing experiences of people during the war, we paid particular attention to the tone and atmosphere of the experience.

Going further we also created onward journeys and sharable moments via a companion online experience.

The installation has accessibility and inclusion deeply embedded in it, it is dual language Welsh and English, with complete subtitling, signing and braille support.

The installation launched at IWM London in late 2021, and had a nationwide tour lasting throughout 2022 and 2023.
